“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
“Don’t interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties.”
“It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people’s minds” Samuel Adams
“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.”
It is amazing how much history that was not taught to us in school. I MUST MENTION THE SCHOOL DISTRICT I WENT TO RANKS VERY HIGH, NOT ONLY NATIONALLY, BUT EVEN LOCALLY….which is SCARY!!!
I’m not even talking about ancient history…. Just the last 200-300 years or more specifically on this post – “The Revolutionary War”
There is so much more I have learned since school that has not only expanded to my general history knowledge but has also corrected some of what was taught. Even today I learned something new.
****OF COURSE I UNDERSTAND THAT WE CAN NOT BE 100% ON ALL DETAILS –
ANYWAY, THIS IS GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE PAUL REVERE STORY that we all learned about or heard about (I think)…I’ll admit that I only remember the name and something to do with him riding around to let the colonists know the “English are coming” and something to do with the lantern indicating 1 if by land 2 if by sea or (whatever) —- Again, I don’t remember the details of this “story” that was taught in elementary school……
Well, it seems that most of the story contains more false information than true information. Yes, He was given a message to inform Lexington and Concord of the British , only he was not shouting or informing people during this historic ride (There were still loyalists as well as British sentinels) so he couldn’t go shouting it out and risk being stopped. Plus there was also another person that was given the same message, and cause, only a different route to insure that the message was delivered.. I never learned this in school or even heard of his name (William Dawes) was the other midnight ride carrier of this message. ———Oh there is even more interesting information on this ONE night in history that include a 3rd person, and interesting story to the ride back…. but I’ll let you look it up and not spoil it ……..
One other name relevant to this moment in history and I think should be more commonly known is Sybil Ludington. A 16yr old girl who also went on a historical ride to rally the militia and inform them that the British were burning Danbury Connecticut.
She rode 40 miles (24 more than Revere)
I’ll stop there lol
OH, THE REASON PAUL REVERE IS MORE WELL KNOWN AND WHY THE ACCURACY OF THE STORY WAS (MISTAKEN) IS BECAUSE OF THE POEM WRITEN BY Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I’m sure many people are familiar with that phrase. “The whole 9 yards”. But I wonder how many people actually know where that saying comes from. I thought it had something to do with football lol
actually it is referring to the us navy hellcat fighter airplane that had 6 .50cal guns which the ammunition belt loaded onto it contained 400 rounds and the belt was 9 yards in length.
So if I pilot unloaded all he had into a target or enemy plane he was giving them the “whole 9 yards”
ME BEING CURIOUS!
It is estimated that 200,000 cars use the Verrazano every day!
So at $15 per car, leaving out trucks (axel charge)—- that is about $3 million per day!!!!!!!!
Verrazano aside, let take a look at the revenue generated from our (NYC) tolls
DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE THE (000s) lol
So as you can see the revenue estimates from 2013 is in excess of $1.6 Billion!
JUST IN CASE ANYONE WAS INTERESTED IN THE OPERATING EXPENSES —- IN 2011, THE TOTAL operating expenses decreased for the third year in a row. Expenses in 2011 decreased 6.4 percent from 2010 to $358.8 million!
That leaves a pretty large revenue stream, probably one of the city most profitable. Wonder where that money goes lol
The last person to walk on the moon Gene Cernan might also be the first person to deface it. Following a promise made to his daughter he carved out her initials on the moon surface.
